Valley of the Sun Stage Race Training Plan

The Valley of the Sun is a demanding early season stage race race that requires you to have strong pack skills as well as a strong time trial. Our 6 week training plan has plenty of time trial intervals while working on your time trialing skills so you are ready to give it your all in February!  Our Valley of the Sun training plan will also increase your aerobic fitness and Functional Threshold Power.

The Time Trial is relatively flat so we’ve included “turtling” work in the TT position to ensure that you can keep your head comfortably tucked for the entire race. This plan also includes plenty of VO2 work to get you ready to punch it up the rollers in the Road Race too. And getting hard group rides in on the weekends also helps you work your pack skills so you can read those break attempts before they get away. And of course there’s anaerobic work with 1 minuters and sprints to sharpen your legs & lungs for the Criterium.

This plan builds over 6 weeks, then tapers into the race. You’ll start the plan with a 20 minute Field Test and the FasCat Training Zones worksheet to set your wattage and heart rate zones so you can train at just the right in each workout. And we’ve included the small details like rest days, race-day Openers, strength & conditioning, stretching and Yoga videos to obtain those marginal gains that make the difference between getting a podium or being pack fill.

    I used this plan for the 2018 VOS Cat 4 race. I was flying come race day. I placed 3rd on the TT. Placed 7th with lead pack for the road race. Previous years I would always get popped on the last climb and lose time. Not this year! Photo finish for the top 5 in the Crit for 4th. I have used all of the cyclocross plans and the 10 week weight lifting plan for cyclist. I can say after a full year drinking the kool aid, I’m a huge fan of the structure of these plans. I can’t wait to see what year two brings!
