midsouthgravel weekend recap. Wow! What an amazing weekend. I signed up for the double after feeling some FOMO watching my friends mtnbikegal and joy.shipmates.joy crush it last year. I needed something to get me back into a routine after a long funk which included a pandemic. 2020 sbtgrvl was supposed to be that boost...but we all know how that worked out.
joshgillam encouraged me to get on a training plan that had proven to show great results for him and with much skepticism, I started using the fascatcoaching sweet spot plans. I added in the long runs from a marathon training plan to get ready for the 50k part to cobble together some running time as well. That skepticism is all but gone now FTFP-ing really worked and I ended this weekend feeling great.
I'm still riding the high of this weekend with my gravel family and friends. And those hugs from Bobby. Those are really good hugs. joy.shipmates.joy killed the single speed 100 and mtnbikegal knocked some serious time off her double. joshgillam left everything out on the 50 mile course. Thanks to toejamfutbol for coming out to carry my snacks and sing with me all through the red dirt roads.
Looking forward to sailing the gravel seas in August at gravel_worlds to finish up the Double Double.

Mid South! A total vibe and party atmosphere where everyone and everything is celebrated. Can we please have more of that? Thanks unlearnpavement for making the world a better place 😊
The hugs, the love, the stoke, the course…we loved it all.
6th place for me in a strong women’s field is a great result. Although my race didn’t go as planned, gravel racing has a way of benefiting those who just keep pushing, racing and never giving up. I was able to jump ahead a few groups by attacking on hills or more technical sections.
I ended up riding with emilyjoynewsom and some strong men for the last half of the race. I felt more confidence navigating the technical sections and single track which is a big improvement for me. I consumed carbs and calories like a champ thanks to maurten_official with no stomach issues.
Grateful for how far I have come, but still have work to do. Proud of my effort, but not satisfied—and that’s okay.
Thanks to the support of my team mazdalauffactoryracing jonnygravel and lindsay_adventure_junkie for the 📸

If you’re looking for a training plan as you prepare for this summer’s Dust Bowl 100, look no further than fascatcoaching. One of the presenting sponsors of the 0-to-100 Challenge, FasCat has recently released their new Optimize app, the first endurance training platform that combines training data and plans with your own health data captured from a wearable device (e.g. Whoop, Oura, Garmin, and soon Apple Watch). The app provides users with a visible representation (and “Optimized Score”) to let them know if they are training too much, not enough, or just right, helping athletes better find that elusive and vital balance between training and recovery.
Additionally, the Optimized app gives users unlimited access to all of FasCat’s training plans, 300+ workouts, meal plans, and recipes, making the app a truly one-stop shop for athletes looking to take their fitness and performance to the next level.
For athletes wanting an even more personalized experience, FasCat also offers individual coaching services. Coach Jake is putting together a personalized training plan for our 0-to-100 Challenge winner Mark and the FasCat coaching team can do the same for you. Based in Boulder, Colorado, FasCat employs a team of high level coaches with years of coaching, training, and pro racing experience. Visit fascatcoaching.com (link in bio) to find out more about the Optimize app, view their gravel training plans, and learn more about their personal coaching options.

Ricky Arnopol joins us to chat through the pros and cons of early season races. He recently completed Challenge Mallorca, which is a series of single day pro races on the island of Mallorca. How do you keep in mind your real goals for the season when in January you're doing the hardest race you have ever done? What mindset can you carry to help you make the most of events that are well before your primary goals?

Feeling blessed to race my bike and take 1st 🥇 at Spinistry’s Texas Chainring Massacre yesterday – and in a sprint finish! For such an early season race I knew the distance of 133 miles would be challenging, especially after taking a look at the start list. However, I was excited to get back to racing and have a ‘check in’ on how my offseason training has gone. I’ve been training more than ever on the bike and in the weight room thanks to isaiah.newkirk and fascatcoaching One of the things we’ve been working on is building my sprint / explosive power and I’m glad to have put it to use!
Part of what I love about racing is that each race unfolds a little bit differently. This race had its own unique challenges. I’ve learned to try to focus on making the “next best decision”. This mantra not only helps me in races but in every day life.
I’m grateful for the race organizers, competition (especially emilyjoynewsom and danieller.larson) and the support of our team’s incredible sponsors. So much more to come in 2023 and I’m looking forward to it!

Was an amazing year full of firsts!
Decided to do the Gravel worlds double team with my friend ultrarunner_josh. And that led to more problems of how to train. Decided to hire a coach from fascatcoaching Ricky Arnopol and has been amazing!
Decided to enter the midsouth 100 as my first 100 mile bike ride and was super hard but finished. Then was supposed to do unbound 100 but broke my toe 3 weeks before so had to defer. But was back and did the solstice 50 miler which was fun but super hot 😂.
Had fun in steamboat springs, co with a vacation with some friends. Went to fish creek falls and a hot spring. Did some gravel routes that were a ton of fun and wished we had that kind of gravel in NE😂.
Then came the beast of gravel worlds 150!
I finished somehow but wasn't pretty. Finished in like 15 hours and had some gut issues but was fun but probably stick with the 75 for awhile😂
Here's to a good 2023!

As I make plans for another year of “Worst Retirement Ever,” I wonder if I’m getting too old for this. Then I look at certain performances which are undeniably as good as I’ve ever done. My 20s were full of fear and fury and desperation for survival in a roller-coaster pro racing environment, my 30s have been fueled more by love and gratitude. Any of those can be used for motivation, but I think part of how I’ve been able to extend it is that positivity burns cleaner. So thank you.
The 2022 season was my most memorable yet. meeting many new friends from all around the world racing in 4 countries and 3 continents. Thank you to all my sponsors, and everyone who helped me along the way!
Say you’re having fun, without saying you’re having fun?!
Today was the #singlespeed #cyclocross National Champs. Last year, I won this race, and I had a blast doing it. And my goal this year was to do the same thing… have a blast that is. Everyone on the bluestagesracing and Blue-adjacent team has been so supportive this week (and this year). dougefreshcx and I spent time dialing the rideblueusa bikes, checking tire pressure and sessioning challengetires tread, choosing gears, discussing strategy. isaiah.newkirk and fascatcoaching rose to the challenge of coaching me through a late season nasty bought of RSV, and then came the mud, and the race, and the only thing left to do was enjoy the moment.
Thank you to everyone who came out to race, cheer (in person and from afar obsoleteforms ), work, and support. Forget village, it takes a freaking city.
And, no, they did not give me the jersey in the line. That’s the one from last year that I rolled to the start line because… Repeat! 🏆
Picks from the days leading up to the race, including a key overall purchase, a coffee ride for baked goods, and a friend-selfie to a few of our favorite peeps that I couldn’t help but share.

At the beginning of this year I set myself some lofty goals. I wanted to race my bike a lot and target three main events: Sea Otter Road Race (open B), Vision GP (P12 track), and the Bay Area SuperPrestige series (Open A cyclocross). This meant training and racing pretty much all year. I knew it was a stretch to peak three times in one year but I gave it a go.
I won Sea Otter.
I podiumed Vision GP.
And I was about to podium BASP until the flu decided to interrupt my season. I ended up 5th in the series, having to miss one race and finish the last with a congested nose.
I’m super proud of the year I put together. Setting hard goals, making a plan and working hard to achieve them is my love language. I LOVE the grind and I love to see it pay off.
This was 2022
45 race days (road, gravel, track, alleycat, cx, hill climb)
3 wins
15 podiums
2 team wins I helped with
530 hours on my bike
8600 miles
Massive thanks to altoveloracing and my teammates for their support all year.
To allieoop365 and fascatcoaching for helping me build an engine that could last me all year.
To podocyte divik.verma and acyeephoto for hoooking me up with fast machines to race on. I could not do it with out that kind of support!
To my community at lipbikeshop and liveinpeaceinc for letting me incorporate my work and my passion so seamlessly.
And to the main engineer and dreamer in my life skyler.espinozaa She gets all the credit for making me dream big goals and work toward them. I aspire to be as crazy as she is.
Already scheming a ridiculous 2023 😈

Lessons from a pro 🎙
stephenbassett sat down with the Fascatcoaching podcast to share what he has learned from his time racing in Europe as well as some top training tips to copy.
Some people look good weightlifting. And then there’s me🤪
.
2023 is coming up fast, so today was my first weightlifting workout after taking a break from training and racing. I honestly love weightlifting and can’t wait to add more reps and lbs as I go through the fascatcoaching at-home weightlifting plan! I love lifting at home; I never have to wait to use equipment 🏋️♀️, the only grunting noise is me 😅, and I can play lizzobeeating as loud as I want! ☺️

2 down 1 to go of this rare three race weekend reallyradcx
📸 grantsagrammer thanks for sharing these photos.
We started with the PanAmerica Champs, where I took the Friday start with a sour stomach and fought hard for a 7th place finish, grateful for another chance to ride my perfectly tuned bike (😘 dougefreshcx ).
Saturday was a different story. A deeper field lined up for the C1, and after some argy-baggy at the start, over the barriers, and through the sand, a clawed my way up from 19th to a group that included some Top10. Feeling good, I pressed through early to see if I could bridge to the next group. Getting within 5 seconds on the last lap.
More racing tomorrow! Thanks for all the work in the pit Doug and nommeke , isaiah.newkirk and fascatcoaching for keeping this chica speedy, and bluestagesracing team for all the good vibes!

Strava tells me I’ve ridden the West side of the Colorado National Monument 60 times this year. That’s 60,000+ feet of intervals, easy spins, some tears, many bighorn sheep sightings, and endless views on this little stretch of road. 🏜 No matter how many times I’ve ridden the Monument, those vast canyons and red rock walls never fail to take my breath away, to humble me, and to remind me of what’s truly important in life. Maybe in 2023 I’ll go for 100 laps of it. 🧐 #coloradonationalmonument #backyardgems #roadbikelife

And just like that my 2022 season is a wrap!
Last year at this time if someone would have told me how my next year would unfold I would have laughed and not believed it.
I became a ‘pro’ gravel and road racer in my mid 30’s, post 4 kids and as a full time mom. I have been able to compete in some of the biggest gravel and road stage races in the US and even internationally. I still have much to learn but stepping back I realize it’s been a dream come true. It’s been a lot of hard work but it has also brought me a lot of joy. ☀️
Thankful for the people who believed in me, guided me, helped me, supported me and gave me the opportunities to race my bike. My faith in God, my husband, family, coach, team and race directors, sponsors, mechanic, teammates and friends. It has truly taken a village and I couldn’t have done any of it without them! ❤️
I don’t know why I’ve been blessed to do all I have been able to do. If anything I hope I can be a positive influence for women and mothers. I hope to encourage others to keep dreaming, keep pursuing goals and to have the courage to do the things you are inspired to do. A spark just might turn into a fire🔥
Time to let my body fully recover. Time to keep dreaming. 2023 is coming. 💥

Shoutout to fascatcoaching and coachkyle_wpa for helping me get into tiptop shape and for sandyutahscheels for the support and opportunity to do this race. It’s all up to the hard work and grit I’ve put in this year but I’m excited to see how it all ends
Back-to-back win at the Mane Event 50 miler wraps up my 2022 gravel season. This has been a full season with a lot of miles, learning, successes, and what if’s. I am riding into the off-season with three overall podiums in three weekends 🥈🥇🥇
Now I am going to freeride for a couple of weeks, sulk for a couple of weeks and start building towards 2023.

For those that were worried I was going full roadie, don’t worry I spent the weekend playing in the dirt.
Saturday spent the day racing Lord of the Springs. Always love racing the mix of gravel and single track at Yankee Springs. Sunday was spent a little speedier at Uncle John’s Dirty Ride racing gravel. Had a minor mishap right before the finishing hill but still had a great race overall.

fascatcoaching will be providing personalized coaching for the winner of the 0 to 100 Challenge, but the rest of you also have the ability to take advantage of FasCat’s coaching and training plan options as you prepare for this summer’s Dust Bowl 100.
Based in Boulder, Colorado, FasCat coaches athletes worldwide and employs a team of high level coaches with years of coaching, training, and pro racing experience, including Indiana-based coach Jake Rytlewski (yep, that’s Jake passing through the Dust Bowl’s Pine Bluff covered bridge - Jake has ridden the Dust Bowl roads many times!).
In addition to personalized coaching, FasCat also offers over 70 training plans that can be purchased a la carte by athletes who want an expert training plan without having to hire a coach. You can view their wide-range of gravel specific plans here: www.fascatcoaching.com/collections/gravel (link in bio).

When you register for fistfulofdirtrace the sheriff doesn’t hide that you should bring your grit, salt, and wide tires because you are in for a big day.
As we lined up the morning talk was the forecast, it was promising to be hot! The start was a little more civil this year, maybe because of the stout headwind. Once on the dam road (this stretch is incredible), the pace picked up a bit and I wondered when the first selection was coming; just as expected, right at the base of the dam. Seven of us were left at the top heading towards the gravel, where the real work would begin.
At the West end of Buffalo Bill Reservoir, the moto pulled off, and into the hills we went. Every once in a while someone would throw down an effort to test the legs of the group, and everyone would respond, this group was strong. Then the #whiskeygravel started to claim its victims. After a couple of flats and thrown chains, the group was down to four. Over the next 30ish miles, all of us spent time off the front or chasing back on back on, then there were 3…
Oh goodie, here comes miles of sandy two-track. Our group of three started separating a bit in here and then it happened. Bam! Over the bars and on my back sprawled out in the high desert. I jump back on, do a quick scour that I have everything, and get back to pedaling. Damn, the bike landed drive side, and yes, my shifting was not right… Oh well, such is racing. From here on I had to be conscious about my shifts to avoid throwing the chain off the top and anticipate where I needed to be for the missed and double shifts.
In the distance loomed the McCullough peaks. I worked my way through putting out the power I had to and conserved where I could. At the end of the climbing, I could feel a twinge in my hamstrings and knew that I was going to be fighting off cramps before this thing was done.
I staved off those cramps for the last 15 miles as I dumped out onto the pavement, into the single-track, and finally town, knowing the finish was near. I ended my day 2nd OA with an AG win. Time to recover a bit badmedicineride is in 5 days.

Got an early start to Mt Wilson with clanning345 to beat the heat, and got my fascatcoaching training done for the day. It wasn’t bad at the top but I’m happy to spend the rest of the day indoors. Whew it’s 🥵!

It is gravel_worlds recap time and a #mettlemonday all in one!
I will start out by saying this wasn’t the ‘A’ race I had hoped for, but such is life in endurance athletics. I had a few issues leading up the event, but tried to remain positive and trust the work that I had put in. What were these issues? Well, Wednesday morning I woke up with a terrible knot in the middle of my back that prevented left mobility in my neck, bummer… Friday, I got swarmed by wasps and stung several times in the legs, double bummer, but whatever… Saturday morning, race day, I am rolling to the start and bam, flat front tire, certainly not the way I wanted to start the day… I threw an tubolitotubes in and continued to the start.
Hundreds of people from all over the world lined up waiting for jasonstrohbehn to hoist the sword and send us out into the rolling gravel seas. And we are off, headlights blazing out into the darkness. As expected at Gravel Worlds the start was spicy. I gave myself 30 minutes to ride at the front and try to gain a good position. Once I sat up to settle into my rhythm I was immediately too far off the back to change my mind and too far off the front to be absorbed, time trial time.
From there I bridged in and out of small groups, finding several people to small groups that worked well. Then around mile 60, my power meter died (new battery before I left), dangit! I have one in my seat bag, pro tip - apparently those can’t ride in a seat bag for a year and a half… No power, ok, in these temps I should be able to ride 160 HR indefinitely, there is my new metric.
Ultimately, I didn’t put in the day I had hoped for, but I moved up a few spots from last year in a deeper field, finishing 18th AG and 101st overall. Not terrible, considering the event brought nearly 3000 people from 49 states, 8 countries, and 4 continents. I love this event and will be back back for more Nebraska rolling seas!

I did something before you got up today 😝
Part one of my sbtgrvl photo dump
I was there in a support role for kelsey.outside doing the sbt red course.
Also took the opportunity to take some photos for my portfolio. I was unable to get a press pass this year bc I didn’t know I was going until like the week of the event. sbtgrvl staff was super gracious with their responses to my emails, I just need to not procrastinate next year.
Would love to actually take photos for a brand or an athlete next year
