2 · The Watts/kg It Takes to Win

20.5W/kg

An estimated ~1578 W held for the finale (endurance + neuromuscular sprints).

What Actually Happened

Tim Merlier does 20.4 W/kg and 1,550 watts for 12 seconds at up to 70.6 km/h. Soudal Quick-Step delivered him perfectly and the fastest man in the race held off Søren Wærenskjold and Biniam Girmay on the line, all with the same time of 3:44:20. Our favorites came up just short: Girmay third, Philipsen fifth, Pedersen eighth.

The sprint data surfaced via Velon: Merlier covered the final 225 m in 12 seconds, averaging 68.1 km/h with a max of 70.6 km/h. Run through our model at his 76 kg, that works out to roughly 1,550 W, or 20.4 W/kg. Our prediction said 20.5 W/kg and ~1,578 watts: the closest bullseye of the Tour so far.
