1 · The Terrain & Who Wins

A mountain day topping out on Alpe d'Huez (13.9 km @ 8.0%). The GC favorites go head-to-head and the strongest climber on the day rides away for the win.

Rider type: GC climbers & pure climbers

2 · The Watts/kg It Takes to Win

6.8W/kg

An estimated ~435 W held for ~38 min (threshold).

The winning move
8.3W/kg · final 1 km

This is the fast, classic side of the Alpe and the first day of the double header, so expect a GC shoot-out, not a controlled tempo. The 2022 GC group rode it in 39:08 (Sepp Kuss holds the Strava KOM at 39:21 from that day) and this Pogačar is a level stronger. The stage is won with a ~2.5 min kick over the final kilometer at roughly ~530 W, on legs already 35 minutes deep. And if he decides Pantani's 36:40 record is on the menu, that takes 7.0+ W/kg for the entire climb.

Today's ride: 75 min · Crescendo Climbing Intervals ending with Alpe d'Huez
CoachCat, build me a 75-minute workout for today modeled on Tour de France Stage 19 from Gap to Alpe d'Huez. Give me 4 Crescendo Climbing Intervals, each proportional to how long the climb takes: 4 min Sweet Spot for the Col Bayard; 6 min Threshold for the Col du Noyer; 4 min Sweet Spot for the Col d'Ornon; and 12 min for Alpe d'Huez as a crescendo of 8 min Sweet Spot into 2 min Threshold into 90 seconds of Zone 5 into 20 seconds of Zone 6 into a 10-second all-out sprint to the line. 4 minutes recovery between climbs, scaled to my FTP, current LEVEL and OTS, and tell me how to pace it.

What that workout looks like (Bayard 4 min Sweet Spot · Noyer 6 min Threshold · Ornon 4 min Sweet Spot · Alpe d'Huez 12 min crescendo: Sweet Spot → Threshold → Zone 5 → Zone 6 → 10-second sprint):
